Beyond Aesthetic: Finding Yourself at Home
Share
At first, designing a home can feel like it’s all about aesthetics. Finding the right sofa. Saving the perfect Pinterest image. Choosing between warm white and creamy white for what feels like the 47th time.
But the longer you design, the more you realize something: your home isn’t just an expression of your taste. It can be a way of discovering who you are.

You Don’t Always Know What You Like Until You Try It
Maybe you start with a neutral home because that’s what you’ve been seeing everywhere. Beige walls, warm wood, cream upholstery. It feels safe. It feels like your style.
Then you bring in a deep green chair.
And suddenly, you’re questioning everything.
You add a colorful rug. Then artwork with a little more personality. Maybe a vintage piece you never would have considered before.
And somewhere along the way, you realize: I actually like color.
That’s the beauty of designing a home. Sometimes you have to see something in your own space before you can understand how you feel about it.

Design Is a Lot of Trial and Error
Designing your home is rarely one perfect decision after another. It’s more like:
Think. Buy. Try. Move. Return. Rethink. Repeat.
You move the sofa three times. You realize the rug is too small. You paint the wall a color you swore you would never use. You discover you love curves but absolutely do not understand why you bought that chrome table.
And slowly, your preferences start becoming clearer.
You begin to notice what makes you feel grounded, energized, inspired, comfortable, or at home.

Your Choices Are Clues
The things you gravitate toward can tell you a lot about yourself.
Maybe you love warm woods because they make your space feel grounded. Maybe bold colors energize you. Maybe vintage pieces make your home feel collected and personal. Maybe you need minimalism because visual clutter makes you feel overwhelmed.
None of these choices are random.
They’re clues.
The more you experiment with your space, the more you learn about what you actually want—not what’s trending, not what looks good in someone else’s home, and not what you think you’re supposed to like.

Stop Trying to Find Your “Style”
Your design style doesn’t have to be something you figure out before you decorate.
You discover it by doing.
Give yourself permission to try the color. Buy the weird lamp. Hang the oversized artwork. Mix the vintage piece with the modern sofa. Change your mind.
Your home doesn’t have to perfectly represent who you are today. It can evolve as you do.
Because sometimes, designing your home isn’t really about finding the perfect room.
It’s about finding yourself along the way.
So, what is your home teaching you about yourself?
