I Saw Your Home Office. I Know Why You’re Ready to Retire.

I Saw Your Home Office. I Know Why You’re Ready to Retire.

The sad desk. The office chair that has seen things. The tangled cords fighting for their lives underneath your desk. The overhead light making you look like you're being interrogated. And let's not forget the room's unofficial second job as a storage unit.

Respectfully, if walking into your office makes you want to call out sick from a job you work from home at, we have a design problem.

Your home office should make you feel inspired, focused, and excited to get to work, not like you're serving a sentence.

So let's give that office the intervention it deserves.

1. Start With a Color You Actually Love

Before you buy the desk, chair, or perfectly curated accessories, decide how you want to feel when you walk into your office.

Do you want to feel calm? Focused? Moody? Creative?

Let that feeling guide your color palette.

And don't be afraid to color drench.

Painting the walls, trim, and even ceiling in one color creates an immersive, intentional look that can make a small office feel incredibly chic.

Scared to commit? Start with the walls and ceiling.

Feeling bold? Take it all the way.

2. Buy a Desk With Some Personality

Your desk is the star of the show, so please don't settle for something that looks like it was issued by HR.

Look for a desk with visual interest, maybe a curved silhouette, sculptural legs, beautiful wood grain, or an unexpected finish.

But don't sacrifice function for aesthetics.

Make sure it's actually large enough for your computer, laptop, notebooks, paperwork, and whatever else your workday requires.

Pretty is great.

Pretty and functional is better.

3. Hide the Cords. Please.

Nothing will ruin your beautifully designed office faster than a tangled pile of cords underneath your desk.

Your computer needs power.

Use cable management systems, cord covers, trays, and clever storage solutions to keep everything concealed and organized.

The goal is for your office to look intentional from every angle, not just the one you use for Teams.

4. Give Your Lighting Some Personality

That boring builder-grade flush mount?

Respectfully, it's time to go.

Your office deserves lighting that is functional and beautiful.

Choose a sculptural pendant, statement chandelier, or interesting flush mount that adds personality to the room.

Then layer in task lighting with a beautiful desk lamp or floor lamp where needed.

Your lighting should make you feel good, not remind you of the fluorescent lighting you escaped when you started working from home.

5. Get the Rug Right

A rug can completely change the feeling of an office.

But please make sure it's actually large enough for the space.

A tiny rug floating underneath your desk is not helping anyone.

Choose a size that anchors your desk and chair while giving you enough room to comfortably move around.

And don't forget texture.

Your feet deserve a little luxury too.

6. Choose a Chair Your Back—and Your Eyes—Can Live With

Your office chair needs to do two things:

Be ergonomic.

Be attractive.

You don't have to choose between a chair that supports your body and one that looks beautiful in your space.

Find one with proper lumbar support and adjustability, but make sure the silhouette works with the rest of your design.

7. Put Art on the Walls

Your office should inspire you.

Fill it with artwork that actually speaks to you, not generic prints you bought because there was an empty wall.

Choose pieces that make you feel something, remind you of somewhere you've been, or simply make you happy to look at them.

And pay attention to scale.

A tiny piece of artwork floating on a massive wall is going to look lost.

When in doubt, go bigger.

Your office is where you're building things.

Let the walls reflect that energy.

9. Give Yourself Somewhere to Sit That Isn't Your Desk

If you have the space, create a small seating area.

A lounge chair and side table can give you somewhere to read, take a call, brainstorm, or simply step away from your computer for a few minutes.

It also makes your office feel less like a workstation and more like an actual room in your home.

And honestly, sometimes the best ideas happen when you're not staring at your screen.

Don't.

This is still your home.

So make it beautiful.

Make it comfortable.

Make it personal.

Because if you're going to spend your days working, creating, building your career, and chasing your goals...

you deserve a workspace that makes you feel good while you're doing it.
