The Art of Editing: Why You Don't Need More
Share
Have you ever looked around your home and wondered, “Why do I have all of this?”
A chair you don't love. Décor you bought because there was an empty shelf. Clothes you haven't worn in three years. A subscription you forgot you had.
We accumulate things simply because they've been with us for a while. And eventually, “I’ve had it forever” becomes the reason we keep it.
But here's the thing:
Just because something has been part of your life doesn't mean it still belongs there.

Edit Your Home. Then Edit Your Life.
As a designer, I spend a lot of time thinking about what belongs in a space—but just as importantly, what doesn't.
A well-designed room isn't about filling every corner. It's about being intentional about what you bring in and giving the things you truly love room to shine.
And I think we could apply that same philosophy to our lives.
We accumulate more than furniture and décor.
We accumulate commitments, obligations, clothes, subscriptions, routines, relationships, and expectations.
Some still serve us.
Some don't.
And some are simply taking up space because we've never stopped to question whether we still want them there.

Ask Yourself What Still Belongs
When you're editing your home, ask yourself:
Does this still serve me?
Do I actually love it?
Am I keeping it because I want it—or because I feel like I should?
What would happen if I made space for something better?
Now ask yourself those same questions about your life.
That gym membership you never use?
The commitment you dread every week?
The clothes that haven't fit your life in years?
The habit you keep because it's familiar?
The expectation you've been carrying because you think you're supposed to?
Maybe it's time for a little editing.

Make Room for What Matters
The goal isn't to live with nothing.
It's to make room for the right things.
In a home, that might mean getting rid of the furniture you don't love so the piece you do love can finally breathe.
In life, it might mean creating space for the people, experiences, goals, and routines that actually matter to you.
Not everything needs to stay.
Sometimes the most intentional thing you can do is let something go.
Because when you stop filling every available space, you create room for something better to come in.
And maybe that's the real art of editing:
Knowing what deserves to stay, what has served its purpose, and what you're finally ready to make room for.
Your home doesn't need more.
Maybe your life doesn't either.
